What is the best blogging platform?

And this is a completely valid question with most blogging platforms. But what looks good to one visitor may not be so great to another.

So we have compared WordPress and Bloggers to help you overcome your chosen headache. What's more, we've included two flavors of WordPress, so there are three great blogging platforms for you.

Let's get started:

Blogger

Blogger was founded by Pyra Labs in 1999 and bought by Google in 2003. As of 2006, each account is hosted on Google's servers, which makes the platform more reliable.

Blogger or Blogspot?

Before we go any further, please clarify any confusion about Blogger and Blog‌spot. Blogger is a free publishing platform, Blogspot is a free domain service provider.

They are both owned by Google and used together on the Blogger platform.

Try entering the URL: blogspot.com
And you end up at URL: blogger.com

When you create your blog on Blogger, you automatically get the Blogspot domain. But you do not have to use the Blogspot domain; You can also add your custom domain:

In short: Google hosts your blog on its Blogger platform with the default Blogspot domain.

Set up your blog

Creating your blog on Blogger is straightforward. If you are doing not have already got one, you may want a Google Account

Please enter a name for your blog.

Select Blog Address (URL) - Blogger will confirm if the blog address you selected is available.
Choose a theme - As you build your blog, some themes will be displayed, but you can browse further and customize your blog later.

Here's how I created my blog:

Create a Blogger Blog

After you create your blog, Google gives you the opportunity to purchase a custom domain from them. This is an optional step, and you can modify it later:

Note: Although you can purchase your domain directly through Google, we always recommend purchasing from a third party, such as NameCheap. This ensures greater control and greater security.

Manage your blog

After the optional step to purchase the domain, you will see your blog dashboard.

This is currently empty, but this is where you manage your blog.
From the left-hand menu you can:

  • Create and view your posts, pages, comments, and stats
  • Change the layout and theme
  • Manage revenue, campaigns, and settings

Above the menu, you can click on the link to view your blog:

No blog posts yet, but in the right sidebar, there is an 'About Me' section that uses your default Google+ profile information.

Create a blog post

Blogger has a native WYSIWYG editor with the option to toggle in HTML mode. You can add pictures and videos to your posts or embed YouTube videos. If you want, you can create your post in Google Docs, and then copy and paste it into the editor:

On the right, you have post settings for adding labels, scheduling a publication date, defining and commenting on your permalink, and options for privacy.

Here is how the published example post looks like:

Personalize your blog

You can change the look of your blog using different themes and layouts.
Get started with the base theme and customize your background, layout, color, font, and more. You can use Blogger theme designer or edit HTML code yourself:

Blogger offers many themes, but you can also upload free and premium themes from third-party vendors.

Blogger uses gadgets (equivalent to WordPress widgets) to help you create the layout of your page. You can use gadgets to display your blog collection, show blog labels in the list on each page, or place your profile on each page.

After you add the gadget, you can drag and drop it as you wish in your page layout:

Wordpress.com

Launched in 2005, WordPress.com is a premium blog service that combines free WordPress blogging platforms and premium hosting into one package:

It starts with a free plan, and then adds three more premium levels. The more you pay, the more features and flexibility you get:

To get started

Getting started on WordPress.com is easy. Once you have an account, you can create your site in three steps:

  • Choose the type of site you want - Blog, Website, Portfolio, or Online Store. (You can change your settings anytime later.)
  • Choose Theme - There is a small selection, but you can choose from more themes later.
  • Choose an address - you can go for free, use your registered domain if you have already purchased one, or purchase one from WordPress.com.

Following those steps will take you directly to your site, which will include the sample first post. This is a great way to see if your new site stays the same without writing a post.

But there are a few other things on your new site‌:

At the top is a menu with a sample of about and contact pages.

On the right is a text widget that you can customize with text or HTML and a search bar.

And below the screen, there are some social sharing icons with WordPress.com branding‌ because it is a free plan.

Managing your site‌

The blog-like menu for managing your site is on WordPress.com:

Manage the Wordpress.com site

You can do this from the four sections in the left-hand menu:

  • Check site statistics and various planning options
  • Create and look at your blog posts, pages, and media
  • Change the theme and look of your site
  • Configure social sharing, users, plug-ins, domains, and settings

The last option is a link to WP Admin - the same admin dashboard you found on WordPress.org. But you can manage most of the content on your site without a title.

Create a blog post

Sooner or later, you will want to create your first blog post. The WordPress.com editor has the same options you found in the word processor, as well as the option to code in HTML if you wish.

If you want to create your blog post in Google Docs, you can use the WordPress.com app to upload your posts and images directly to your site as draft posts.

Create a WordPress.com Blog Post

The content selection in the top left corner allows you to add media from your computer, photos from your Google Photos account, or a contact form from your blog:

Insert blog content

And in the right sidebar, there is a post settings menu to set the location of the blog post, assign categories and tags, add your featured image and social share buttons.

Personalize your site

WordPress Customizer opens up several different options to help you personalize your site:

WordPress.com Customizer

From the left-hand menu, you can change colors and backgrounds, fonts, menus, widgets, and more. There are also editing icons on the main screen that take you to the relevant customization options; Such as site recognition to change your site title and tagline.
